Writing support services are available to students who are seeking assistance or feedback on their writing at any point in the writing process. The writing tutors are available to help you generate ideas, organize your thoughts, construct arguments, and properly format your papers in APA style. Tutors can also assist you in the research process by helping you find and use scholarly sources. You may also visit the ARC to seek regular assistance and tutoring that is not related to a specific assignment.

Students may access academic resources in 2 ways:

  • Schedule an appointment with a writing tutor through email or by phone - please see our schedule on the Welcome page.
  • PLEASE NOTE: writing tutors may need 5-7 business days to review and return papers, depending on the length of the paper and the number of students seeking assistance at any given time. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO SEEK ASSISTANCE.

The APA has created a VERY helpful website that organizes its most important rules in a user-friendly fashion.

We highly encourage all students to purchase the most current edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. This Website offers supporting information about APA style and format too. While the book doesn't address it, this source offers instruction on how to cite information found on a Website - just be sure it's a reliable one.

As a student at MCCN, you receive a FREE Grammarly membership. It will make your life infinitely easier, but only if you use it, and use it correctly. First, be sure that you sign up for your FREE account by going to https://www.grammarly.com/edu/signup and filling out the form. Use your mccn.edu email address. If you use another address, you will not receive a free membership. You MUST use your mccn.edu email address.

Once you've created an account, you can upload your entire paper to Grammarly. It will then "read" your paper and offer a detailed report of any grammar mistakes, instances of word repetition, awkward sentence structures, and misused words. If you feel overwhelmed by the report, do not feel discouraged. It is one step in the process. Print out the report and make an appointment with the writing tutor in The ARC. The writing tutor will go through the report with you and help you make the appropriate changes. Then, once you get the hang of revising papers with the help of a Grammarly report, you'll know what it's like to have your life made easier.

Remember:

2. Sign up for your free account - with your mccn.edu email address

Synthesis Writing

"Although at its most basic level a synthesis involves combining two or more summaries, synthesis writing is more difficult than it might at first appear because this combining must be done in a meaningful way and the final essay must generally be thesis-driven."
